Hungry by Crystal Renn - There are
not enough good words to put down about this book. A
former 00 size model tells her remarkable story about
life with anorexia and her journey to finding acceptance
with her now size 12 body. Watching her struggle as she
goes from a literally starving model to living the good
life as her career takes off as she is now the most
coveted plus size model in the world is inspirational.
An AMAZING read as she intertwines her life story with
scientific studies about the supposed obesity epidemic
in America and the way women look at their bodies and
themselves in general! It's both unique and exceptional
and one that i could not recommend enough!! For
sufferers of eating disorders, family members, or those
just looking to understand more about the psychology
behind the way we think when we choose to starve our
bodies, Hungry is worth reading!!!!
Purge: Rehab Diaries
by Nicole Johns
- A real look at what life inside a rehab center is
really like. Reading this book i couldn't help but to
mark up the pages with underlines and sticky notes to go
back to later. Her words could have been straight out of
my own journal. Saying the gritty truth that not
everyone is willing to put out there. A really
remarkable read for anyone who is struggling with or
recovering from an eating disorder! It's inspirational
without being corny or cheesy, real without being
shocking for the sake of shocking. A unique perspective
and a book worth picking up for patients and family
members alike! Showing the side of this illness we don't
always want to talk about but every family needs to
hear!
Insatiable by Eve Eliot - The fictional
story of four teens, all of whom suffer from disordered
eating; two anorexics, a bulimic, and a compulsive over
eater. The book follows their stories as they go through
the trials and pitfalls of what having an eating
disorder can due to your life as a teenager, physically,
emotionally, and socially. However the book would have
been better suited choosing one character and developing
her story to a truly in depth level, what you end up
with instead is a surface deep look, at best, at their
eating disorder behavior. It's a good read as far as a
piece of fiction goes and perhaps one i would give to
the little brother or sister of someone suffering from
an eating disorder. You don't get caught up in medical
jargon and the stories are interesting enough to keep
you compelled to want to keep reading. Warning: The book
talks in depth about food and binges so it could be
triggering for some! All in all it's a good book and a
lighter read so it might be worth picking up but i was
expecting a LOT more since the author is a trained
psychotherapist.
The Passion of Alice
by Stephanie
Grant -
DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!!! After completing this book i
felt a little hopeless and insanely triggered! It's
marketed as a recovery book but much of the book is
pro-eating disorder, and she never changes the tone from
angry and bitter at her rehab center. Plus her rehab stay
was during 1984 in one of the first ed centers, so much of
the book is not just pro ed but outdated as well. There are
some very racy and graphic lesbian love scenes near the end
of the book which would make it not appropriate for girls
under the age of 15 i'd say. Hell some of it made me
uncomfortable and i'm 20! They seem unnecessary to the
story and to be frank i would have rather done without. On
top of that, several parts of the book were quite
triggering for me and i found myself wishing i could be
anorexic instead of feeling empowered towards recovery. In
all honesty, when it comes to picking out good reads or
inspirational tales of recovery make sure you note this
book is
neither!!!
