Dr. Susan Guzman, PhD Susan Guzman, PhD is a clinical psychologist specializing in diabetes. Dr. Guzman received her PhD in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in health psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology – San Diego in 1998. She specialized in diabetes following the completion of her post-doctoral fellowship at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego where she served as the psychological liaison to Scripps Health’s Diabetes Advisory Committee. Her clinical and research focus areas include overcoming barriers to effective management, healthcare professional/patient communication issues, challenging diabetes stigma and promoting language around diabetes that is respectful and helpful. In 2003, Dr. Guzman co-founded the Behavioral Diabetes Institute (BDI), the first non-profit organization devoted to the emotional and behavioral aspects of living with diabetes. At BDI, she has served as the Director of Clinical/Educational Services developing and led programs for people with diabetes and their families. She developed and led many of BDI’s clinical programs, including “Defeating the Depression/Diabetes Connection.” She also held programs for women with type 1 diabetes, spouses/partners, men with diabetes, and other specialized psycho-educational programs for those with diabetes. Dr. Guzman integrates empathy, acceptance and practical guidance to help people better utilize their strengths in living life with diabetes.

Dr. Ann Goebel-Fabbri, PhD Dr. Ann Goebel-Fabbri worked for 16 years as a clinical psychologist and researcher at Joslin Diabetes Center and as an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Her work involved teaching, research and treatment focused on disordered eating behaviors in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Goebel-Fabbri has published numerous research papers and academic chapters. She currently runs her own private psychology practice specializing in treating patients with eating disorders and type 1 diabetes as well as a full range of other patients. Dr. Goebel-Fabbri consults to healthcare teams and organizations about their work with diabetes patients. Her clinical and research activities have been featured in the popular media, including BBC Radio, Good Morning America, National Public Radio, Huffington Post, CNN, and the New York Times. Dr. Goebel-Fabbri’s recent book, Prevention and Recovery from Eating Disorders in Type 1 Diabetes: Injecting Hope, was published through Routledge Press.

Sian Morris, BSc, MA, MBPsSian Morris is a provisional psychologist from London, England who is in the final stages of completing a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Metanoia Institute. Sian is a passionate advocate of raising awareness of eating disorders in type 1 diabetes and has focused her research on better understanding the lived experience of individuals with type 1 diabetes using insulin for weight control. Sian has shared her research in several UK based forums and conferences, specifically those run by The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals, and Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. Sian currently divides her time between her scholarly pursuits, her private psychotherapy practice and a non-profit counselling service. Sian is a member of Diabetes with Eating Disorders (DWED), the UK sister site to Diabulimia Helpline and looks forward to developing her psychological career further in the field of diabetes and eating disorders.

Janice Dada; MPH, RDN, CDE Janice Dada, MPH, RDN, CDE is the owner and principal dietitian of SoCal Nutrition & Wellness, a nutrition counseling and consulting practice based in Newport Beach CA. In her private practice, Janice specializes in helping individuals and families optimize their health, well-being, and eating behaviors. As a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, Janice offers personalized nutrition counseling and group workshops using a non-diet, weight-inclusive, Health at Every Size (HAES®) framework. Additionally, Janice has trained with the Integrative and Functional Nutrition Academy (IFNA), and weaves integrative and functional nutrition into her non-diet work. Her experience in the nutrition field extends from individual counseling across a wide range of ages, body sizes, cultures, and abilities to leading small and large group workshops to teaching undergraduate and graduate level nutrition classes. Heather Gabel-Walker, MS, PhD Heather Walker recently completed her PhD in Disability Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, focusing on the politicization of diabetes in online communities. Heather's research takes a deep dive into the constructs of diabetes identity and culture and the social and political implications of collective claims over what it means to live with it. Aside from research, Heather spends time writing and performing slam poetry, brewing kombucha, and playing at the park with her husband, toddler, and pug.

Holly Paulsen is Registered Dietitian specializing in, and working nearly exclusively within, the eating disorders and diabetes education fields for more than ten years.She provides outpatient medical nutrition therapy for eating disorders and diabetes for Unity Point Health Systems in Iowa and owns a private practice delivering eating disorders care virtually via telehealth. As a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor she often provides presentations on incorporating this method in medical nutrition therapy services and frequently presents on the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. Holly is also an IADEP approved Certified Eating Disorders Dietitian Supervisor (CEDRD-S) and offers consultation, training and supervision to dietitians and therapists through her private practice.

Liana Abascal, Ph.D., MPHLiana Abascal, Ph.D., MPH, is a clinical psychologist who is passionate about helping people living with diabetes. She has held positions at the Behavioral Diabetes Institute, the UCSD Eating Disorders Clinic, and at the Rady Children’s Hospital Diabetes Clinic. Since 2000, she has been involved in both research and clinical work related to chronic disease prevention and management especially including diabetes, obesity, and eating disorders. Cara Oppegard, MSW candidateCara Oppegard is a graduate student at the University of Washington completing her Master's degree in Social Work. She earned her BA in Psychology from Eastern Washington University, and she has been working in the mental health field since 2008. She has specialized experience working with clients with eating disorders, addiction issues and other mental health challenges. While completing her graduate education, Cara remains with Center for Discovery as a per diem counselor at their residential level facilities in the Greater Seattle area. She is also currently completing an internship with the Seattle-based non-profit, The Center for Chronic Illness. Cara has been living with her own chronic illness since her diagnosis of T1D in 1994. Creating space for people to talk about the emotional impacts of chronic conditions, and forming meaningful connections to others, is something she has found to be very important to the community. Cara's personal experiences and educational background have led to her passion and professional interest in addressing and treating the mental health aspects of living with chronic conditions.

Alison Sullivan, RN Alison Sullivan graduated from UAS LVN program in 2015 with Honors. She's an RN. She has an AS in Health Education emphasis in Kinesiology and is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer. She currently works at Rocky Point Sub Acute Rehab as a Rehabilitation Nurse. She previously worked at Mendocino Community Health Clinic as a Diabetes Case Management Nurse, responsible for coordinating an outreach and education program for all diabetics within a defined clinical population, identifying and intervening at risk diabetics, coordinating the roll out of the Pump Program for Rural Residents, identifying patients who would benefit and connecting patients within the diabetic population with resources within the community. She says "My passion for changing the face of diabetes care has lead me to where I am today." Alison is also a Type 1 diabetic and in recovery rom ED-DMT1.

Erin Akers After struggling with Diabulimia off and on for a decade, Erin created the oldest and longest-running support group for diabulimia in 2008 and then went on to found Diabulimia Helpline in 2009, the world's first non-profit organization dedicated to support, awareness and advocacy for those struggling with diabetes and eating disorders. She trains eating disorder centers and implement a diabulimia program at centers across the country, as well as teaching at diabetes clinics all over the U.S. Erin can be found in numerous publications, such as Diabetes Forecast, Diabetes Health, Diabetes care, and PLAID. She has also appeared on Huffington Post Live, NBC News, and Discovery Health Channel. She launched the Healthcare Professionals Education series in January 2013 to target diabetes professionals, and their lack of understanding about eating disorders. She consulted for Duke University on a research project investigating behavioral triggers around food and insulin in type 1 diabetics. Sarah MacLeod Sarah MacLeod has lived with type 1 diabetes since 2005. Diagnosed as a fifteen year old freshman, Sarah struggled with the daily management of diabetes for many years, often vacillating between steadfast, dutiful diligence and the extreme polarity of ignoring her diabetes altogether. Her experiences with depression, burn out, and diabulimia inspired her to seek out better tools to help navigate recovery and the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of diabetes. As a yoga and meditation teacher, reiki practitioner, and female empowerment leader, Sarah hopes to share with others what has helped her to heal. She is a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and specializes in the mindful, intentional integration of cannabis into her client’s health and wellness routines. Sarah lives just outside of Boston with her partner, Zack, and their two dogs, Nook & Hawkeye.

Qiana DrewQiana Drew spent her youth listening to R&B and Pop music and decided early on that she wanted to be a recording artist. She became a singer/ actress who has worked with the likes of Missy Elliot, L.A. Reid, and has even made it on to the American Idol Hollywood stage. Diagnosed with Type One Diabetes at the beginning of her entertainment career, there was no way anything would get in the way of her success until the secret she held on to for 10 years started to wreak havoc on her body. It was an eating disorder that made it impossible to put the importance of Diabetes management above all else. Upon Qiana’s recovery of Diabulimia, she was inspired to go back to college to pursue a degree in Nutrition for Wellness and founded the Diabetes support non-profit organization “The Anchor Holds”. Today, Qiana is dedicated to bringing about change within the healthcare system as a DSME Peer Support Specialist.
